Autostart fails on login, Leave is inoperable

I'm tracing a problem with debian kde. Randomly, at login, all of the
autostart stuff fails, (at the kmix icon-there isn't one.)
Additionally, the Leave function does nothing, (requiring su and
shutdown to be initiated manually from a terminal.)

The following is in dmsg, kern.log, and messages when things stop:

    [ 23.726038] r8169 0000:03:00.0: eth0: link down
    [ 23.726499] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    John
