i tried to install it, but it's not in the repository yet.

i'm thinking that the first line "maildir is invalid" suggests indexing is 
being stored in the wrong place perhaps which may be why kmail can't find 
it?

i'll keep testing it on different folders to see if i can make some sense of 
it.
