Try upgrading the NVIDIA driver to one from testing/sid/experimental (they've been released by NVIDIA, so usually they're fine). I don't remember which version, but one adds compatibility with the latest X-server ABI.
Thanks. I have 290.10 from NVIDIA. But my card is an old GF6200.
I think I'll have to look at the settings (like compositing). Hope I find this bug because there's no problem at all when first logging in, only after a logout so something isn't being done right.
