Sound broken after upgrade

Need a little help here. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I last upgraded this box on 18 February, and ever since, I have no sound. I have an SB Live 5.1 in the box, and things worked fine before the upgrade. However, when I log in to KDE (4.3.4), I get a popup asking me if I want to permanently remove the SB live entries in the Sound and Video Configuration tab of systemsettings. So right now, it is defaulted to:

* PulseAudio
* SB Live! 5.1 [SB0060] (rev.7, serial:0x80611102) (ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback)
* SB Live! 5.1 [SB0060] (rev.7, serial:0x80611102) (Multichannel Capture/PT Playback)
* SB Live! 5.1 [SB0060] (rev.7, serial:0x80611102) (Multichannel Playback)
* SB Live! 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback (Rear speakers)
* SB Live! 5.1 [SB0060] ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback (Center and Subwoofer speakers)
* SB Live! 5.1 [SB0060] Multichannel Capture/PT Playback (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output)
* Jack Audio Connection Kit
* Esound (ESD)

...Of these, all of the SB Live! entries are grayed out. And no sound. Note that I also have a BT878 TV capture card.

 How do I need to configure KDE to get my sound back? The output of the TV capture card works, but the SB card does not. When I try to run ogg123 to play a file, I get the following:

Playing: hpr0278.ogg
Ogg Vorbis stream: 1 channel, 24000 Hz
ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:4154:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such file or directory

ALSA lib pcm.c:2211:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
ALSA snd_pcm_open error: No such file or directory
Error: Cannot open device alsa.

What is the "right", "Debian" way of systemwide configuration of alsa and pulse?

Thanks,
