No change.  I tried running inside a Konsole and logging out of KDE and
ran it from a virtual terminal with X killed.

One thing I noticed is that the laptop had a ~/.menu directory that was
dated sometime in 2006.  I moved it out of the way as the desktop
machine didn't have that directory.  That made no difference either. 
However, that directory showed only the one installed wine app that
appears in the KDE menu.  Strange.
