OK--got it working. Here's how:
Follow the instructions, zoom out, configure plasma, different activities...
ZOOM IN immediately to 1st desktop. Adding "activities" here is problematic.
Now, for each desktop (number set in pager, not by added activities!), one can 
set desktop name ( = activity name?), wallpapers, plasmoids, icons, etc.

Might need to straighten out activies vs desktops once the UI is consistent 
between these (i.e. I somehow got 5 activities over 4 desktops which HAS TO 
cause problems somewhere!--how does one remove such "activities"?)
