I found a similar issue, see:

http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeon%3Ar6xx_r7xx_branch

and

http://bugs.debian.org/523385

I skipped the step of changing to the experimental driver and found
that the driver works very well but crashes the kernel (2.6.29 Debian)
when X is exited. The latest Xorg Radeon drivers depend on kernel
driver support from the forthcoming 2.6.30 kernel. Apparently the
Ubuntu folks have backported the kernel drivers to their 2.6.28 kernel
and while desktop effects work in Jaunty, they are much slower on my
machine than the rebuilt drivers are with Debian 2.6.29 on my machine.

My xorg.cong is very brief having been generated by `dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg' and I am running a Thinkpad T41 with a Radeon Mobility
M7W chipset.
