Perhaps you have not installed the right certificates which are necessary to complete the chain of trust for the certificate which was used to sign/encrypt the mail you have received. This seems to be a bit tricky. I imported them with konqueror and at the end of the import I was asked if I want to make intorduce this certificate to kmail also. Yes is the right answer. Good luck!
