I do this, although I'm running Ubuntu on the laptop to a Debian Sarge 
"server" - it's on the floor rather than a desk.

Do you mean that you when you select "Remote Login" from KDM that no 
servers are displayed in the XDMCP Host Menu?

If not, what happens when you add the host via XDMCP Host Menu?

I'd never tried that. Here (on the laptop), it did a lot of flickering - 
a lot more than when starting a second session on the local machine - 
but connected okay.
