Hey! I was doing exactly the same thing! Can I claim copyright?

I had to with this gnarly Sony laptop. Nothing else seemed to work but 
Knoppix, with some additions for AGP and such.

Indeed.

Unfortunately, the "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" that is 
suggested in order for the altered config to be automatically 
rewritten in the future isn't working. It's saying, "config file 
changed, no overwrite". Well duh, that's the point!

One step at a time, ne?

Oh, and this has nothing to do with KDE. KDE in Debian is working 
great.
