Have you tried setting the Encoding to Autodetect -> Japanese?

I like Kochi Mincho And Kochi Gothic fonts (ttf-kochi-mincho &
ttf-kochi-gothic), and you can also search and install Bitstream Cyberbit.
This last one is unicode.
