You can update fairly easily from KDE 2.x to KDE 3.1.4 by adding
deb http://download.kde.org/stable/latest/Debian/ stable main
to /etc/apt/sources.list.
This is very stable on my Woody box.
Note that you will also install some backported packages from
unstable/testing.
