AFAIK, the alsa driver via-82xx can handle 4.
$ cat /proc/asound/pcm
00-00: VIA 8233-Pre : VIA 8233-Pre : playback 4 : capture 1
00-01: VIA 8233-Pre : VIA 8233-Pre : playback 1 : capture 1
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [8233Pre        ]: VIA8233 - VIA 8233-Pre
                     VIA 8233-Pre at 0xe400, irq 5
1 [UART           ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
                     MPU-401 UART at 0x300, IRQ 10

More than one with the midi port would make much sense, anyway ;)
And there are two additional alsa timidity client ports for internal midi
playback (but those use a pcm playback source each when used).
