The beatiful black-white check pattern (haha! haha!) is the default
background of the X server. To get rid of it, you'll have to modify the
X server startup options, 'man xserver' and poke around in /etc/X11 (I
don't know in witch file exactly the X server is started, sorry. iirc
it's somewhere in XSetup.d or so).
