KDE 3 doesn't have a new default style, it looks exactly the same as
KDE 2. What you are probably experiencing is the incompatibility
between the newest qt packages in unstable (3.0.5) and the current
KDE 3 packages. If you use qt from unstable, you can use only pure QT
styles (which are indeed not very beautiful) but not KDE styles.
You can do two things about this:
1) Wait for updated KDE 3 packages compiled against QT 3.0.5
2) Downgrade to the QT in testing, e.g. by doing
# apt-get install libqt3/testing libqt3-mt/testing
