Got it. A kerberos thing. But why doesn't apt-get build-dep pull it?
The Build-Depends read:

alpha:~$ grep "Build" kdebase-crypto_2.2-cvs20010622-4.dsc
Build-Depends: automake, libtool, debhelper (>> 3.0.0), sed,
libpam0g-dev, kdelibs-dev (>= 4:2.2-0), libssl-dev, kdelibs3-crypto,
libkrb5-dev

Is this a symlinking problem?

alpha:~$ ls /usr/lib/libdes*
/usr/lib/libdes425.a   /usr/lib/libdes425.so.3
/usr/lib/libdes425.so  /usr/lib/libdes425.so.3.0
