You need an /etc/printcap file which contains the names of the printers.
The kde print dialog reads this file and shows the printers in it, this file 
is from the bsd lpr daemon as far as I know, more modern printing solutiions 
like lprng or cups don't need this file anymore.
Cups can autogenerate it, I don't know if it is possible with lprng.

Here is a sample of /etc/printcap. The files in front of : are the
names of the printer which exist on your system.
