I was also looking into this a few days ago, but I am not a Java
programmer at all. However, I would suggest to make a "gradle8" package
that could be installed in parallel with the existing Gradle. The
benefit is that the new package doesn't need to be feature-complete, and
can even (initially) have a higher bug-tolerance while keeping
everything running as-is for the time being.

These are just my 0.02 cents, and this is where I was trying to go.

I also found that downloading the "source" package from the website is
probably not a good idea, and went for the Github repository instead,
after finding lots of .class files in the "source" repository and
getting the impression that some bits might be missing.
