Work on the transition in Ubuntu is underway. I have successfully
rebuilt/tested/fixed all ~100 packages in Ubuntu main and I'll be
running a rebuild test of the remaining ~800 packages in Ubuntu
universe over the next few days to re-assess the list of FTBFS we
generated last Ubuntu release.
The Ubuntu Security team discussed supporting OpenJDK6 for the
duration of Ubuntu 12.04 (the next 5 years) at UDS-Q as we did not
complete the transition during the 12.04 cycle.
The current thinking is that we will endeavour to form a cross distro
team to fix any critical issues in openjdk-6 over the next few years -
we believe the Redhat/Fedora will have similar challenges with the
releases they need to support as well.
See https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/security-q-openjdk
for more details - Steve Beattie (cc'ed for information) from the
Ubuntu security team is coordinating this work.
Cheers
