Never having used Java3D i will still try to answer: As far as i can see the java3d-re package in Debian non-free depends on libgl1, which suggests that it uses OpenGL for rendering (great!). So you wan't to go for a card with decent OpenGL capabilities, nVidia has OpenGL enabled closed source drivers, so that should work. However you might want to consider another chip maker like Matrox, i believe they have open source'ed their drivers. I'm sure other people remeber better which cards are open source (i'm stuck with the nVidia drivers because that was the only card i could choose in my Dell laptop). -- There are only 10 kinds of people in this world; those who know binary and those who don't.
