I was going to try that package to see what happens here, but it doesn't seem 
to be in Debian, I'm running unstable/experimental. 

My problems with SCIM weren't so much that it made things die totally, 
although it sometimes did, it was more that input was totally fudged with 
some applications. For example when typing Japanese into kopete using things 
like exclamation marks and question marks either wouldn't show up or deleted 
the entire section of text being inputted. Most applications worked fine 
however.

In my experience if you use the "off the spot" method to display what you're 
inputing there are less issues with applications crashing or acting 
strangely. But it doesn't look very nice. ;)
