I use jfbterm(to replace kon) on my laptop with framebuffer (sid), and
emacs21 and wanderlust(MUA). I can read/write japanese character and
accented character also easy.
In my ~/.emacs
(cond ((>= emacs-major-version 21)
(if (not window-system)
(set-terminal-coding-system 'compound-text-unix))))
When you want to type french sentence on emacs21, type "C-x RET C-\"
for select-input-method, and press TAB in minibuffer, appeared the
selection from leim(quail) system, then you could choose
french-postfix, french-azerty, or the others.
My env;
~ $ env
COLUMNS=83
EDITOR=vi
HOME=/home/shinichiro

JLESSCHARSET=japanese
LANG=ja_JP.eucJP
LESS=-M

and I could type "carré, Côte du Rhône, à la crème, Provençal"
etc... in this environment.
