Make sure your review your error logs. (Maybe your Directory index is
forbidden ...".)
Make sure you are editing the correct httpd.conf file.
Make sure your DirectoryIndex directive is being used. (Where is it in
your configs?)
Make sure you tell apache to use new config (restart it our use
"apachectl graceful)".
How do you know the mod_dir module is activated?
(By the way, the default for DirectoryIndex is "index.html".)
