Yeah, the Debian sendmail setup procedure sucks big-time ;(

Hrm, does a diff of the old/new sendmail.cf show anything pertinant?
The Debian version set some timeout values that may be too low... but in
anycase you should have some indication of what went wrong in the file
/var/log[/mail]/mail.{info,warn,err}
