An update, the maintainer of the thunderbolt-net driver has confirmed this to be a bug. As such this is upstream from Debian.

Me neither as I am not a developer.
Is it reasonable to assume this is happening in the thunderbolt-net driver?
If so i can ping the dev team again on that (i already asked them but they went quiet... and i don't like to bug people if i can help it..)
