I'm using 6to4 with my static IPv4 address. Some sites

fine. Unfortunately others don't seem to be working at all
(www.kame.net, ipv6.research.microsoft.com,
altavista.ipv6.digital.com.)

www.kame.net seems to be unreachable from a 6to4 host, but the two others are not even reachable from a native IPv6 host. altavista.ipv6.digital.com resolves into a deprecated an now unrouted 6bone address (3ffe::/16). ipv6.research.microsoft.com resolves into a 6to4 address which should be reachable directly from another 6to4 host but does not seem to reply even from a native IPv6 host, and an IPv4-compatible address (::/96) which is deprecated.

6to4 does not get routed symetrically.

Native IPv6 routing is not symmetrical either.

there is an IPv4 multicast address for 6to4 gateways I don't think

Actually it is an anycast address, not multicast.

there's an equivalent on the IPv6 side (I could be wrong here)

You're wrong, there is an equivalent IPv6 anycast address.
