After the maintainer looked at the bug he reverted a change that was made with the patch http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi/pango.patch?bug=252401&msg=27&att=1 Basically the two things that were added were LDFLAGS += -Wl,-z,defs LDFLAGS += -Wl,-O1 Which raises the question are these flags sufficiently tested by the binutils test suite? -i
