I've just become involved in a thread on gnome-i18n about getting
true Unicode fonts for distros.
Gentium (a true Unicode font) has been released under the Open Font
Licence:

and Doulos looks worth testing:

We're not getting anywhere, apparently, with lobbying Bitstream about
Vera, but I've written to the creator of Verajja and Gentium Alt
about possible release of his fonts.
Jim Gettys very kindly replied to my query about his lobbying of
Bitstream, and said:
I will be poking at other font vendors. I recently
poked at Adobe, but it isn't the part of Adobe that deals with
fonts, so
I have no idea if I'll get anywhere from that attempt.
so, hoping the Poke is with him, we should hear if there's any
progress. I personally don't think Adobe, who assume ordinary people
can pay $2000 for a program, have much grip on the economic realities
of life in the third world.
Junicode is another true Unicode font:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/junicode
and there is a group of Unicode fonts created for Vietnamese, but
which cover the whole code set AFAIK.

Everson Mono, a true monospaced Unicode font, turns out to be
shareware :(.
What others do we have? What do you think are our best true Unicode
fonts for distribution, to support all localizations?
