I had to jump through hoops to read it. Like you, I am not
familiar with the particular issues involved.

I emailed off-list to point out that gmail seems to base64-encode
emails in most character sets, so is not a good choice for
debian lists at this time.  Base64-encoding is unnecessarily
awkward for some of the ways that debian lists are transmitted
(such as newsgroups) and limits the readership. debian lists
code requests plain text anyway and gmail should be asked by
its users to fix this i18n bug.

Until it's fixed, maybe gmail shouldn't be used on-list? I'm
pretty sure there are webmail services which do this better.

This was brought back on-list despite being off-topic, but it is
not my choice. I feel your reply on this point is too aggressive.
