I have run Debian hurd-i386 on different laptop models none of which
particularly recent. I have found that I usually need to set the disk settings
on the BIOS to compatibility mode, and I have always found issues when trying
AHCI mode (both with rumpdisk and in-kernel drivers)

Are you trying to use rumpdisk? For that you would need to add the noide flag on
your gnumach line on your GRUB configuration.

Rather than using the pre-installed images, you may try the installer and see if
your disk is detected there.

I hope that helps somehow.

João
