Please test and contribute...
Hello,
I'm sorry I have to write this, but I believe it should be written.
Please don't take it personally (I'm not quoting authors on purpose),
I just use this as an example to express what I have in mind for years
already.
> However... 'crosshurd' is currently broken:
and has been so for a *long* time already.
> 'crosshurd' also forgot to install '/sbin/init'.
This sentences looks like saying that the script is dumb, or its author
is dumb. I fully assume it was not the intent, but that is how it
does look like and is perceived by the maintainer. The script did not
"forget". The init package used to be priority:required in the past, but
it hasn't been for a few years already, thus breaking the script. But
nobody took the time to report the issue (and propose a tested fix,
thanks!) until very recently.
The real solution is to make crosshurd use mmdebstrap, so we don't have
to maintain this any more. Contribution will be very welcome.
> It would be a good idea [...]
We are not out of ideas. We are out of people working on things,
proposing fully-baked patches etc.
I already spend *all* my hurd free time on fixing stuff after people
have contributed things which break in various ways. The proposed patch
here (again, please don't take it personally, it's just an example at
hand) shows an example:
- [...] | sed -e "s/^device\://"`
+ [...] | sed -e 's/.*part\:\(.*\)\:device\:\(.*\)/\2s\1/'`
This fixes the part:1:device:hd0 case, but breaks the device:hd0 case.
I end up taking the time to fix it, because I have stopped trying to
take the time to explain the problem with the proposed fix, wait for an
updated patch, and eventually commit.
Another example is people asking for at last switching to lwip. I have
been waiting for years for people to contribute tested patches to do
this.
I just cannot do everything, so people have to help.
To quote somebody famous:
“
ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your
country
”
> Is there still a limit on the amount of swap Mach/Hurd can manage?
I don't know. The faq may know. The faq may be out of date. If it
doesn't say anything about it, testing will tell.
