The sha1sum of the uncompressed file begins with 40fe376fe6a ... Also, downloaded the non-compressed one from the net and it works fine and matches the sha1sum on the site.
I recompressed the orginal image I got from debian-hurd-20200101.img.xz and it matches the sha256sum on the site.
So I think that file is corrupt on the server.
