Sure, but fakeroot is the standard way of building Debian packages, so
it would be really nice to a working version of it now. I'd certainly
love to use Hurd's fakeroot.

How about we ship the Hurd's fakeroot as /bin/fakeroot-hurd? Or
negotiate with the fakeroot author/maintainer to use dpkg's alternatives
system for it? (there is both fakeroot and fakeroot-tcp in the fakeroot
package anyway [only -tcp works on GNU/Hurd]) That way, the admin can
choose which one is the default.
