perl 5.8 status

Hi,

What is perl-5.8 status? Why is it not in the debian archive?

Without perl 5.8, installing debian key development packages (debhelper,
dpkg-dev) won't work.

We need to get a working package urgently. If someone can hack it to
compile, we can upload the hacked package to gnuab.

Could someone have a look? I don't have access to a working GNU system
currently.
