BTW, one of the last dpkg uploads included a new feature for
architecture-dependent Depends:, not only Build-Depends. Furthermore,
doogie seems to be rewriting dpkg as dpkg2 (don't know whether he still
does after he was told that it would not get into sarge).

Perhaps now is the right time to try again settling on an arch-handling
to rule them all? Dpkg needs to be changed to cope with mixed 32/64 bit
userspace for PPC64, AMD64 and S/390x anyway. To me it seems like that
might be tightly bound to our problem.

Marcus, are you still interested in that? I can understand if your
enthusiasm died away some time in the last 4 years...
