I had tried these in my first attempt (http://faculty.acu.edu/~westk/A_Beginners_Attempt_to_Install_the_Hurd.html), but when things went wrong, and I found "The easy guide to installing Hurd on a Linux box" (http://www.pick.ucam.org/%7Emcv21/hurd.html), I followed the boot sequence there.
Thanks for letting me know that I need to go back to the Walfield document's examples. I'll give a try in the next few days (I actually had to quit playing with the Hurd and do real work at the tail-end of this week - Doh!).
