I think that this task is directly related to X.  In fact, I know recall
that the gl stuff in X was doing something weird, like linking a C library
to libstdc++ or something like that.  This is the X patch where you add
-lstdc++, I think.

This might be the root of all evil, and you should carefully analyse this
situation and check out where the problem is.  This is much more important
than to get the latest version of X running with hacks.
