The solution is quite simple: I had no idea that the latter option,
i.e. pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, exists at all. (If I didn't overlook
something, there was no mentioning in the announcement of the new Hurd
console, cf http://hurd.gnufans.org/bin/view/Hurd/HurdConsole ) So
while looking for a way to exit the console I tried killing all kinds
of processes which did't deliver the desired results.
Sorry and thanks for enlightening me.
Still, I think I have experienced instances of the console freezing
randomly (while I was using lynx) and not accepting any more keyboard
input. But I don't know if I can reproduce the scenario that provoked
this.
