Re: eric raymond

I don't remember anyone saying you must read ESR's book (by this I
assume _The Catherdral And The Bazaar_). However I think it's worth a
look for anyone doing distributed development. Right or wrong I think
his ideas are worth thinking about.

My take on ESR is that while he is not part of the Free Software
movement he is part of the Open Software movement and that makes him
closer to us than, say, Bill Gates. Linus seems to have no moral
compass at all, but, for instance, choose the GPL for Linux. That
makes him closer to us than, say, the BSDs (maybe). I really like the
BSDs and admire their work.

I have never heard an official position of the Free Software movement
with respect to the NRA.

No two people's morals are exactly alike and, IMHO, the free/open
software movements tend to eat their own too much.

What really matters to me is that while niether Linus, nor ESR have
contributed code directly to Hurd they have both contributed
indirectly. So have the BSDs. So, again IMHO, they have something
valuable to offer us and shouldn't be dismissed dogmatically.
