Actually, you can "turn off" pthreads by editing the file
debian/gen-makefile in the debian source tree for gs. It also
makes life simpler to turn off various unused devices --- at least
those that depend on pthreads.

After this the gs debian source compiles and produces as usable
gs*.deb. (I can send more info if required but clearly gs needs pthreads
to be *actually* ported). I will submit a normal bug to gs giving the
relevant patch for PIPE_BUF to gdevhpij.c thanks to Roland's explanation.
