Same syndrome for me. 64M K6-2. Lots o swap.

I initially did a cross-install. On the latest attempt, I did a tarball
install instead. The system seems stabler now. Can't exactly put my
finger on what might have done it, though.
Mind you, I haven't used the Hurd system much lately, so I can't say for
sure that the problem has completely gone away. Perhaps just reduced to
acceptable levels.
