I was told it was invented so that the user-space NFS server could
take on the identify of a user as far as file system access is
concerned but not be susceptible to signals from the user.
Old Linux systems (1.2.13) didn't have it. Sometimes a user would see
this huge process "nfsd" with their name on it, assume it shouldn't be
there and kill it. At that point, everyone would find NFS didn't work
any more. I hope the Hurd works better than that.
