My understanding is

dpkg --unpack runs the preinst script prior to unpacking the .tar.gz's and
might run the prerm and postrm if an old package has to be removed.

Why do these scripts cause a problem for the Hurd, and what is your
prefered behaviour if the functionality of these scripts is required ?

I updated busybox dpkg a while ago, it hasnt had much testing though. The
buysbox build system hasnt changed yet, so i havent done anything about
porting busybox, but the build system changes are in the pipeline.
