I believe that, according to http://www.debian.org/ports/hurd/hurd-cd, the
line
grub> kernel /boot/gnumach.gz root=hd0s1 -s

should read

grub> kernel /boot/gnumach.gz root=hd0s2 -s

if you have the system in the second partition, as grub counts partions from
zero, and mach from one.
