I am experiencing similar problem: I crossinstalled Hurd with default hostname "hurd". Then I changed it to "shodan" using command "hostname shodan". But at the prompt (bash) it writes "shodan" plus two probably random characters. In /etc/hostname there is only "shodan", nothing more.
