There is also an old appendix on Mach from the Operating System Principles book, you can download it from http://www.bell-labs.com/topic/books/os-book/, I can recommend this for a 50K ft. birds-eye view of Mach. If you want to see Real Hurd Code there some examples of translators in the CVS tree that make for nice simple introductions (hurd/trans/null.c and hurd/trans/hello*.c).
