my a180 was in production for several years (HP-UX 11.00)
and external DVD device works ok on ather HP servers too. :)

I have the same problem with my newly-obtained C160 !
In my case, there _might_ be doubts over the hardware as the previous owner
had not powered up the machine for over 2 years. However, there are no
detected problems with fastboot off.
Yours in anticipation of HPs support for Debian ;)
