RE: A mistake buying J6700?

The J6700 is a relatively old system in computer terms.  It does have the capacity of 16GB of ECC memory, and dual 750 MHz PA-RISC processors.

In terms of performance, a modern Inel Core 2 Duo processor will be 2-3 times faster for general computation, quieter, and support a vastly wider gamut of software.  In short, if you don't have a specific need for a J class system, you probably don't want it.

The J class systems are very reliable, built for 24x7 service as workstations or technical servers.  I had one in my office for years, and didn't find it unusually loud.  You've already addressed the rack vs deskside fan configuration.  The only other thing I can suggest to address the noise is to make sure there is no dust impeding the airflow and that you don't have a bad fan in the power supply (you should see a message BAD FAN on the front panel during self test if this is the case)

Greg

Subject: A mistake buying J6700?

I'm thinking if I made a mistake buying this computer..

I think it was cheap.. (700USD == 10gb ram, 2x 73gb fwscsi .. ) I thought it would be much better, stronger than regular pc's hence to the double risc processors and amount of ram. But if I even cannot use the box as server, I think I made a mistake. And since i can't find HPUX anywhere for free.. And If I did, I could not use it regularly because of the loud noise from the fan.

I thought it was much stronger, reliable than regular pc's .. isnt it? How much stronger is the double RISC processors, for instance against intels core duo?

What could I use it for to take advantage of the power in linux? Is there any way to find latest HP-UX on the net?

regards
