But you can always start emacs w/o opening a new x window:
emacs -nw
or in a new xterm
xterm -geometry 80x50 -e emacs -nw

Ryan Bradetich looked at this and found that it was because of a
compiler problem that miscompiled libXt. The compiler problem has
been fixed, but you will need to wait until libXt is reuploaded to
Debian for this to work....
