I just realized you might need entries in /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free
deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free
then run apt-get update/upgrade and try apt-cache again.
FYI, I'm using "unstable" (not testing) and "hybrid" (testing + some
unstable) so YMMV.
